logo musees de France Musée Alfred Canel -- The Alfred Canel Museum

This 17th-century private residence in the town centre was redesigned in the 19th century as a public building to the honour and glory of its donor, the republican, humanist and historian Alfred Canel (1803 - 1879).
The space is divided between the original library collection and the museum founded by Canel.
The highly-reputed library collection comprises some 25,000 books, documents and manuscripts (many of which concern Normandy), displayed in their original bookcases.
The museum, founded in 1876 to "moralize through education, charm through the arts and enrich through the sciences", resembles a curiosity cabinet. Overhead natural light floods in, illuminating the collection of paintings, interspersed with Coleoptera, herbals, fossils, ceramics and other objects.
